چکیده

The aim of this study is to explore the nature of the semantic effects in the picture–word interference paradigm. In particular, we focused on the (a) identity effect, (b) semantic interference effect, (c) semantic facilitation effect, and the semantic facilitation in categorization. Our model is based on integrate-and-fire neurons which are put in a network context featuring modular competition and cooperation at both intraand intermodular level. A finely tuned balance of competition and cooperation is required to combine the mentioned effects in a coherent framework. We show that the mechanism for categorization must be functionally decoupled from the basic level mechanisms. r 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The semantic nature of response competition in the picture-word interference task

Picture-word interference refers to the fact that when a picture (Le.,line drawing) is presented with a word superimposed, picture naming latency is longer than when the picture is presented alone. In addition, naming latency will be further prolonged whenever the word and the picture are members of the same semantic category. This semantic interference effect was investigated in a series of st...

The word class effect in the picture-word interference paradigm.

The word class effect in the picture-word interference paradigm is a highly influential finding that has provided some of the most compelling support for word class constraints on lexical selection. However, methodological concerns called for a replication of the most convincing of those effects. Experiment 1 was a direct replication of Pechmann and Zerbst (2002; Experiment 4). Participants nam...

When more is less: a counterintuitive effect of distractor frequency in the picture-word interference paradigm.

Pictures were shown with superimposed word distractors of high and low frequency. Low-frequency distractors produced greater interference on picture naming than did high-frequency distractors. This distractor frequency effect was not affected by manipulations that facilitated or hindered distractor recognition. Interference was reduced for distractors that were read aloud several times prior to...

On the categorical nature of the semantic interference effect in the picture-word interference paradigm.

Two picture-word interference experiments are reported in which the boundaries of the semantic interference effect are explored. In both experiments, participants named pictures (e.g., a picture of a car) that appeared with superimposed word distractors. Distractor words from the same semantic category as the word for the picture (e.g., CAR) produced semantic interference, whereas semantically ...

Picture-word interference is a Stroop effect: A theoretical analysis and new empirical findings

The picture-word interference (PWI) paradigm and the Stroop color-word interference task are often assumed to reflect the same underlying processes. On the basis of a PRP study, Dell'Acqua et al. (Psychonomic Bulletin & Review, 14: 717-722, 2007) argued that this assumption is incorrect. In this article, we first discuss the definitions of Stroop- and picture-word interference. Next, we argue t...
